A defense of Dr. Lentini

Three weeks ago I wrote about Laurel’s visit to the Salem doctor, Jerome Lentini, who has been accused by the FBI of using unauthorized drugs for Bo-tox treatments on as many as 1,000 patients.

Friday I got an email from a person who apparently worked for Dr. Lentini at one of his “A Younger You” clinics in Tigard and Salem, since her email address was ____@ayoungeryou.org. She felt that Laurel got the wrong impression of Lentini, saying he “is an ethical man who cares for his patients more than any physician I know.”

I’ll share her entire email in a continuation to this post in the interest of fair and balanced reporting.

However…Laurel still stands by her impressions, though admittedly they are from a single visit to Dr. Lentini. She felt that he was uninformed about bio-identical female hormones even though the “A Younger You” web site claimed Lentini specialized in hormone replacement and cosmetic surgery. Laurel says that he pushed Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which wasn’t at all what she was interested in.

The web site has been taken down, but a Google cache of the “A Younger You” home page still exists. There you can see Lentini’s claim that he is Board-certified by the American Board of Anti-aging Medicine.

However…a January 7 article in the Oregonian says, “Although Lentini’s Web site included assertions he is certified by the board, no such certification exists, a board spokesman said Thursday.”

Maybe Lentini really is a competent, caring, ethical doctor, as the message below claims. However, the “howevers” I’ve mentioned—combined with the core accusation of using potentially dangerous Bo-tox—raise quite a few questions that need to be answered before Dr. Lentini opens up a practice again.

Laurel,

I am very sorry that you felt it so necessary to display your comments about Dr. Lentini on the internet. Dr. Lentini is a very kind and compassionate man. He would never be deserving of the comments that were made by you. Dr. Lentini was mislead by a distributing company and is a very trusting man. He would never hurt anyone intentionally. Any one who knows him would dispute your claims.

He does not drink alcohol and is an ethical man who cares for his patients more than any other physician I know. His office was inviting for any type of patient including the rich and poor. He constantly donated services to those who couldn’t afford them. I hope you realize that no one is perfect and he was trying to answer your questions with the most honest answers. He was impressed by your knowledge and surely wanted to make certain that you had the appropriate information regarding your concerns.

Please give him the respect that he deserves. He would never intend to harm anyone and has suffered a great deal throughout the last few weeks while he was publicly scrutinized. He is an excellent Emergency Room doctor and has 27 years of experience without one complaint or any harm done. He has traveled world wide on charity missions, donating his services to the sick and poor.

I am aware of your right to freedom of speech but also aware that you have misread him entirely. How could you judge someone on one visit in his office? He has hundreds of happy patients that are very supportive of him and the care they have received. His family and friends support him and believe in him. The sad thing is that your statements are the ones ringing in his mind. I am sure he would apologize to you if you felt that your experience was not pleasant and he would talk to you and hope to reassure you that his intentions were good. You came to him for help and he was trying to give you that in the best he knew how.

I would love to hear back from you and hope to ease your concerns surrounding Dr. Lentini.

I really miss the “Face Lifting Cream” I used to by at the doctors office. Is there any place I can still buy that cream?

I have tried to understand how Dr. Lentini could have jeopardized so many of his patients, too, because he seems like a very careful man. But as this investigation unfolds and as the class action lawsuit will reveal, this was not a forgivable, isolated misjudgment. He fraudulently sold “Botox” that was incorrectly obtained, he did the same with his “Restylane” and “Juvederm”, he marketed and used Lipostabil (which is not FDA-approved for anything in the USA), and he aggressively promoted HGH. These are not the actions of a careful man or a man who should be entrusted with the health of patients. I feel that what I have learned about Lentini reveals a fundamental recklessness with patients when there is profit to be gained, rather than siding with caution and safety. As a former patient, I am angry that I was jeopardized and I see no reason to be lenient because he “is a nice guy”. When I went to him and paid him for services, he lied to me, and he either knowingly or unknowingly did not follow the rules about obtaining medications that would have helped ensure my safety, and would have given me better results with fewer side effects.

Hello I am Dr. Jerome Lentini’s daughter. I thank anyone who supports him. He is an ethical man, and he would never intentionally hurt anyone. He has always strived to provide the best service to his clients. I personally believe that he was mislead. Mislead by people who are selling products, that as to his knowledge were good. We live in a world full of greed. He is a human being. I await this day to meet a perfect person.

There is a reason Jerome does not drink. He gets drunk smelling the bottle cap. He always has. So do his brothers, and so do I. For some reason we are all easily intoxicated. Sorry pal.
