If your iPassword extension for Safari disappeared, this worked for me to get it back

Recently the 1Password extension for Safari disappeared on my MacBook Pro. The extension wasn’t showing in Safari settings, so most of the tips for getting it back that I found via some Googling didn’t apply. Nothing else worked either.

I was down to the tip of uninstalling 1Password on my computer, then installing it again. I was reluctant to do that, because I didn’t want to risk screwing up my much-beloved 1Password, which I use a lot and had been workin fine until the extension disappeared.

So I asked 1Password support for help. Soon I got an email from a support person, Hozefa. After I explained my problem, Hozefa suggested some fixes that I’d already tried. Then Hozefa suggested a fix that I hadn’t come across.

It worked! Except for step 6, since “Fix Missing Safari Extension” in 1Password Help did exactly nothing the many times I clicked on it.

But that step wasn’t needed, since the other steps returned the extension to my Safari toolbar. Here’s the message I got from Hozefa. Hopefully someone else with the same problem will find this as useful as I did. I didn’t need to do the “Finally…” part, since the extension appeared in the Safari toolbar automatically.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for getting back to us with the additional details. It’s much appreciated!

I understand you’ve already tried a few troubleshooting steps, but since the issue is still occurring, let us move on to a more detailed troubleshooting process.

Try the steps below in this following sequence, then check whether you are able to add the 1Password icon back to the Safari toolbar.

  1. If Safari is currently open, fully quit Safari by right-clicking (or Control + click) its icon in the Dock and selecting Quit.
  2. Open Finder > Applications, then drag 1Password for Safari.app to the Trash. Then, empty the Trash.
  3. Reopen Safari, go to History, and clear your history (clearing the last hour for all profiles is sufficient).
  4. Quit Safari again by right-clicking its icon in the Dock and selecting Quit.
  5. Open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app, ensuring that it’s fully updated.
  6. From the top menu bar, click Help > “Fix Missing Safari Extension”.
  7. Reinstall 1Password for Safari from the App Store:
  8. ☞ Hold down the Shift key while clicking the Safari icon to reopen it.

Finally, add the 1Password icon to Safari’s toolbar by following the steps in this article:

Let me know how it goes. I look forward to hearing from you!
