Yellowbook, stay out of our mailbox! It’s illegal.

Curses to the companies that drop unwanted "yellow pages" directories beside our mailbox. That's littering, and we hate it.

And double curses to Yellowbook for putting the Salem – Keizer 2012 2013 version of their unwanted directory inside our mailbox without postage or an address label. That's illegal, and we hate it even more.

I've filed a complaint with the Postal Service, choosing "tampering" as the offense. If this happened to you, and you want to file your own complaint, here's the Yellowbook corporate headquarters address and phone number (this is needed to file a Postal Service complaint):

Yellowbook
398 RXR Plaza
Uniondale, NY  11556
516-730-1900

Through Google I confirmed that it is illegal to put something in another person's mailbox without postage. This is Section 1725 of the United States code at 18 USC:

Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such
as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like
matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box
established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the
receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to
avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such
offense be fined under this title.

May Yellowbook be fined, and fined, and fined again for every directory they illegally put in peoples' private mailboxes. And may every business which advertises in Yellowbook realize that my wife and I never, ever keep the free directories which are dumped unwanted and unasked for on our doorstep.

I am really surprised that printed media is still considered worthwhile for the purpose of advertising. Around these parts (New Jersey) they actually pay people to distribute circulars and such in the wee hours of the morning. As far as I am concerned, they are just littering. It will stop soon (hopefully). That will leave a certain segment of the population without means to supplement their income…oh well…
