Homosexual marriage letter printed (barely)

For the benefit of local residents who didn’t notice my letter to the editor that was printed in the Statesman-Journal today way down there at the very bottom of the second page of the “Opinion” section, here’s a link to my profound musings about the economic benefits to Oregon of making this state a “heaven” for homosexual marriage (in case that link disappears from the S-J web site, here’s the letter as I submitted it.)

Perhaps the humble placement of my letter was karmically produced, since I stole Laurel’s ideas, wrote them up, and signed my name to them. Late last week Laurel commented to me that gay and lesbian marriage could be an economic boon to Oregon. That made so much sense to me, I conducted two minutes worth of Internet research on the buying potential of homosexual households, whipped up a letter to the editor, and emailed it off.

It may well be a blessing, though, for the letter to have such a low opinion page profile. On the Channel 2 news last night we saw a story about a man who has been making telephoned death threats to a Multnomah County commissioner who authorized the issuing of marriage licenses to homosexual couples. Some TV crews went to the man’s house (he actually left his name on the recorded phone messages), whereupon he grabbed a camera out of a guy’s hand and tried to kick him. One of those morally upright defenders of traditional marriage, clearly, who show their ethical superiority by threatening to kill you if you don’t agree with them.
