We are the 1%! (heart-health wise)

My wife and I have proudly marched in Occupy Salem events, chanting "We are the 99%!" But we're pleased to learn that we're also in the 1% -- the percentage of Americans who met all seven metrics of cardiovascular health. Fox News and Krauthammer lie about Chevy Volt safety

We own an electric car, a Nissan Leaf. Conservatives are more fact-challenged than liberals

Yesterday I heard POTUS's Pete Dominick ask his satellite radio listeners an interesting question: What's the weird unfactual stuff many liberals believe that is equivalent to conservative lunacies like Obama being a Muslim? Dominick observed that a majority of Republican voters in Mississippi think President Obama is Muslim rather than Christian. I have a mountain bike. But I shun mountains, because they are so up'ity. Flat or downhill... that's my ideal bicycling terrain.  Since we live in the hills of rural south Salem, this constrains my interest in bike-riding. Sadly, our adopted dog didn’t work out (too fearful)

There were tears. More than a few. In fact, I'm feeling some start to flow right now as I begin to write about us having to return Pooka to the rescue shelter yesterday.   She was only in our life for three weeks, a young dog with a wonderful personality who my wife and I came to love. Oregonian editorial page editor dies in illicit sexy fashion

Death isn't a joking matter. Still, I can't resist saying "Way to go, Bob Caldwell."  The Oregonian newspaper reported Monday that Bob Caldwell, the long-time editor of the editorial pages, died in the apartment of a 23-year-old woman after going into cardiac arrest following a sex act. The paper had previously reported that Caldwell was found in his parked car. The paper now says the woman was the one who called 9-1-1 on Saturday to report that Caldwell was unresponsive. Sneaky land use shenanigans in 2012 Oregon legislature

Oregon’s environment survives GOP attacks in 2012 session

Whew. That's my one-word environmentalist reaction to the end of Oregon's first ever regular "shorty" legislative session in an even-numbered year. My wife and I were afraid that Republican efforts to undermine our state's land use, endangered species, and forest management laws would succeed in the speeded up craziness of an abbreviated session -- where public hearings often were a sham and last minute deals on important bills were the norm. Flying into Portland and Burbank shows why Oregon shines

In this 2012 session of the Oregon legislature, haters of our land use system once again are trying to kill it through a thousand cuts (HB 4095 being a prime example). I urge each of these "pave it over" advocates to do what my wife and I did last Friday and today: take an Alaska Airlines flight into Burbank, California, then return to Portland, Oregon. (Instead of Burbank, Phoenix would be an even better bad example of non-planning.) Young girls who dance like Tina Turner. What’s up?

Today my wife, Laurel, and I got our first look at big-time children's dance competition. We spent most of the day watching the Los Angeles regionals of The American Dance Awards, held in Lake Elsinore, California at Lakeside High School. Our four-year old granddaughter apparently was the youngest contestant, dancing in two six-and-under categories (small group tap and small group jazz). We loved every moment of the dancing. OSU setting traps to kill wildlife needlessly

Why, Oregon State University? Why would you contract with the federal government's animal killing machine, Wildlife Services, to indiscriminately set traps for fawns, racoons, coyotes, dogs, cats, and any other creatures able to crawl under the OSU sheep farm fence? Dog adoption update: Oh, no, we’ve got a dingo!

It's Day 2 of our dog adoption saga. Reality is setting in. Pooka is doing fine. Much more relaxed and well-behaved than we expected (aside from just trying to eat a leaf from a houseplant).  However... I'm convinced that the rescue shelter was wrong when they billed her as a Shepherd/Lab mix. Pooka clearly is a dingo! My wife, Laurel, is a dog "LOVER." I'm a dog "lover": lower case; hold the boldface.  That's why I'm waiting for her to come home with a dog we've adopted from a rescue shelter in Gig Harbor, Washington. Gig Harbor.
